Ebano Dome
Ebony from the Ebonaceae family is found worldwide in hundreds of varieties. It's name is Greek for "Fruit of the Gods" and was originally used for drinking goblets. It is found primarily in India, Africa and Southeast Asia and in America as Persimmon. A one hundred year old tree would be just 50 feet tall and one and one half feet around. The color varies from black (Gabon Ebony - Africa) to dark chocolate brown with dramatic black, beige and grey streaks (Macassar ebony - Indonesia) to green (Jamaican ebony). Indian ebony, from Sri Lanka may be the best. Black is increasingly hard to get resulting in the use of black dyes by some manufacturers. It has a fine texture and a straight to wavy grain, finishes to a beautiful sheen and is so dense that pilot holes are needed before nailing. Because of its hardness, durability and its ability to take a high polish it is used for piano keys, knife handles, turnings, cabinetwork and in this case Humidors.
